Hi Alan, our client operates a VAT registered business on a part-time basis as a sole-trader. To supplement his income, he tendered for a short contract with a State Organisation and would be engaged as a self-employed contractor; this work is completely different in nature from his existing business and is only likely to last for 4-5 months with a total value of about €14k. Is he required to charge VAT on this new business activity to the State customer?

As he is registered for Vat, he must charge Vat on all his activities. If the activities are completely different, then he could set up a company to operate the second business separately but probably not worth his while as it’s only for 4-5 months!
