Alan Werlau, Head of Investment Advisory, Davy Private Clients
Alan will discuss the prospects for the Irish and global economy in the context of a continued recovery and escalating geopolitical tensions. He will also share his insight on investment portfolios in 2018 amid uncertain developments, such as Brexit and the like.

About the speaker

Alan joined Davy in 2015 from New York. He has over 25 years’ experience in asset and investment management, and advising high net worth clients and global family offices in his previous role at UBS Investment Bank. Prior to working at UBS Alan was also the founder of hedge fund Black Arrow Capital Management, and has held previous roles at Deltec Asset Management, Bankers Trust and JP Morgan Chase. Alan is a member of Davy’s Global Investment Committee, with particular responsibility for managing Davy’s UK investment offering. Alan holds a B.A in Foreign Service and International Relations from the Pennsylvania State University.

Tax issues facing solicitors
Cathal Lawlor, Partner, Alan Moore Tax Consultants
Cathal is going to address crucial tax issues encountered by solicitors in general practice around capital taxation and probates. The presentation also includes a review of the Finance Bill provisions on the recent stamp duty changes.

About the speaker

Cathal is a Chartered Tax Adviser and Trust and Estate practitioner with over twenty years’ experience specialising in private client taxation. This includes providing advice on Capital Gains Tax, Capital Acquisitions Tax, the tax efficient transfer of assets, Income tax planning, residence and domicile matters, termination payments, Revenue Audits and investigations and VAT on property.
He joined Deloitte in 1996 after graduating from UCD with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He qualified from the Institute of Tax while gaining a wide range of experience in both Personal and Corporate Tax with Deloitte before joining Mazars in 2001. He managed the Personal Wealth Division for Mazars before joining the family practice.

Anne Corrigan, Head of Private Client Group, Tax Department, Arthur Cox
Anne will talk through some topical issues, case law and proposed legislation of relevance to your private clients as well as reviewing the regulatory regime for your charity clients three years after the establishment of the Charities Regulatory Authority.

About the speaker

Anne is Head of the Private Client Group in the Tax Department of Arthur Cox. She specialises in advising on tax and legal issues arising in the use of trust and other structures in asset management and conservation, and in furtherance of charitable objects. She is regarded as one of Ireland’s leading authorities on trust law, and advises on all trust-related issues including the scope and nature of the powers available to trustees; trustees’ duties and obligations and the rights of beneficiaries. Anne is a barrister and was lecturer in Revenue Law in the Faculty of Law, University College Dublin for 11 years from 1989 – 2000. She has presented papers at numerous conferences on trust and taxation issues. She is co-author of “Trust and Succession Law” (fourth edition; 2007) published by the Irish Taxation Institute.

Structuring businesses for SME owners
Frank Greene, Tax partner, Mazars
Frank will provide detailed guidance and practical examples he has worked on over the past 12 months, where accessing tax reliefs and incentives such as Entrepreneur Relief, Retirement Relief, Business Property Relief and Employment & Investment Incentive Scheme, has been to the forefront.

About the speaker

Frank was appointed Partner in Mazars in 1999 and is responsible for dealing with the tax affairs of many corporate clients, including PLCs and multi-national companies. A member of the Irish Taxation Institute, Frank has extensive experience in property, particularly tax-based developments, corporate finance and corporate restructuring, maximising shareholder wealth on purchases and sales of companies and also advising clients in relation to Revenue Audits.
Prior to joining Mazars in 1990, Frank worked in the Office of the Revenue Commissioners, dealing with corporation tax, income tax and capital gains tax. He also lectures extensively to various professional and business organisations on the tax aspects of Property and Corporate Finance.

About the speaker

James has 24 years of experience in Financial Services, during which time he spent 8 years with Standard Life, latterly as Pensions Development Manager, moving to Ulster Bank Wealth in 2007 as Associate Director. In August 2012 James joined Lucas Financial Consulting who specialise in Retirement Planning, Investments, Business and Family Protection. These services are offered on a business to business basis for clients of Accountancy Practices as well as personal clients. He is a member of LIA’s Board of Directors.

Tax free employee rewards and employment tax management
Ken Killoran, Tax Director, Mazars
Ken will talk on how employers can still make tax free payments to employees, how the recently announced KEEP share scheme and other shares schemes work to benefit employees, as well as how to manage risk for employers in dealing with PAYE/PRSI/USC. The experience he has gained in the practical aspects of employee rewards and the operation of PAYE/PRSI/USC will be shared with the attendees in a practical manner, with reference to particular aspects that he has been involved in.

About the speaker

Ken Killoran commenced his career in PWC where he worked in Global Employment Solutions. Ken moved to Mazars 9 years ago and now heads up the group dealing with Employment Taxes and Share Incentive Schemes.
