Interpretation Act 2005 section 2

Interpretation

Section 2 defines the key terms used throughout the Interpretation Act 2005, establishing what is meant by "Act", "enactment", "repeal", and "statutory instrument".

  • An "Act" means an Act of the Oireachtas (Irish Parliament) or a pre-Constitution statute that remained in force under Article 50 of the Constitution.
  • An "enactment" covers any Act, statutory instrument, or any part of either.
  • "Repeal" is defined broadly to include revoking, rescinding, abrogating, or cancelling legislation.
  • A "statutory instrument" encompasses a wide range of secondary legal documents β€” such as orders, regulations, rules, bye-laws, and licences β€” made under an Act.
