Finance (Local Property Tax) Act 2012 section 132

Income threshold for deferral

Section 132 sets out the income thresholds that determine whether a liable person may defer payment of local property tax, either in full or in part.

  • A single person occupying the property as their sole or main residence with gross income not exceeding €18,000 may claim a full deferral of local property tax.
  • Where the liable person is married, in a civil partnership, or cohabiting, full deferral is available if the couple's combined gross income does not exceed €30,000.
  • A partial deferral of 50% of the local property tax is available where a single person's gross income does not exceed €30,000, or a couple's combined gross income does not exceed €42,000.
  • Interest, known as deferral interest, is charged on any deferred amount, which remains outstanding until a relevant event (such as the sale of the property) occurs.
