Repeals

Schedule 2 lists all the older laws — dating from 1226 to 1964 — that are repealed, in whole or in part, by section 8 of the Succession Act 1965, in order to replace the previous patchwork of succession and estate-administration legislation with a single modern code.

• Seventy-four enactments spanning over seven centuries are repealed in whole or in part, clearing away the former statutory framework for administering and succeeding to the property of deceased persons.
• The repealed laws are organised into four groups: English statutes (from 1226), pre-Union Irish statutes (from 1537), British statutes (from 1798), and statutes of Saorstát Éireann and of the Oireachtas (from 1926 to 1964).
• Many Acts are repealed entirely, while others lose only specific sections or phrases — particularly references to outdated concepts such as dower, curtesy, and coparcenary.
• The repeals take effect under section 8 of the Succession Act 1965, which provides the legal authority for removing these earlier provisions from the statute book.
