Stamp duties on instruments

Schedule 1 lists in alphabetical order the instruments chargeable to stamp duty and sets out the applicable rates of duty.

  • Conveyances or transfers of stocks and marketable securities are chargeable at 1% of the consideration (with an exemption where the consideration does not exceed €1,000), and conveyances of insurance policies are chargeable at 0.1%.
  • Conveyances or transfers of residential property are chargeable at 1% on the first €1 million of consideration, 2% on the next €500,000 and 6% on the balance, with a special 15% rate applying to bulk acquisitions of 10 or more residential properties other than apartments.
  • Conveyances or transfers of non-residential property are chargeable at 7.5%, reduced to 1% where consanguinity relief applies to transfers of farmland between qualifying relatives.
  • Leases attract duty on any premium at the rates applying to conveyances and duty on rent calculated on the average annual rent at 1%, 6% or 12% depending on whether the term is up to 35 years, between 35 and 100 years, or over 100 years.
