Foreign Government securities

Section 89 exempts transfers of stocks or other securities issued by foreign governments and foreign local authorities from stamp duty.

  • No stamp duty arises on conveyances or transfers of stocks or other securities of a government of any territory outside the State.
  • The exemption also covers stocks or securities of a foreign local government or a foreign local authority.
  • A foreign local authority is the overseas equivalent of an Irish local authority as understood under the Local Government Act 2001.
  • A foreign local government is any local or regional government in a jurisdiction outside the State.
