Stamp Duties Consolidation Act 1999 section 125C

Policies of insurance other than life insurance

Section 125C imposes a quarterly stamp duty levy on insurers in respect of non-life insurance policies issued during each quarter.

  • A levy of €1 per relevant policy applies to non-life insurance policies covering Irish risks where the premium, or premiums payable over any 12-month period, equal or exceed €20.
  • The insurer must e-file a statement with Revenue within 25 days of each quarter end showing the number of relevant policies issued in that quarter.
  • The stamp duty must be paid on delivery of the statement, and late payment attracts daily interest under section 159D.
  • Income protection policies and policies paying out on ill health, disability, accident or hospitalisation are excluded from the charge.
