Taxes Consolidation Act 1997 Schedule 2 para 1A

Chargeable person

Schedule 2 para 1A defines the key terms "chargeable person" and "specified dividend income" for the purposes of the Schedule C charge on dividend and coupon income.

  • A "chargeable person" is any person in the State who pays, collects, sells, or purchases dividends or coupons that are subject to income tax under Schedule C or Schedule D
  • "Specified dividend income" covers the full range of dividend amounts, coupon sale proceeds, and coupon purchase prices that fall within the Schedule C or Schedule D charge
  • The definitions capture not only those who pay dividends out of public revenue but also bankers and coupon dealers who handle foreign dividend income
  • The schedule was amended by the Finance Act 2012 to reflect the obligation on paying and collecting agents to deduct tax at source when making payments of specified dividend income
