Taxes Consolidation Act 1997 section 172I

Statement to be given to recipient of relevant distributions

Section 172I requires every person who makes (or is treated as making) a relevant distribution to provide the recipient with a written or electronic statement showing prescribed details of that distribution.

  • When a company or authorised withholding agent (AWA) makes a relevant distribution, it must give the recipient a statement showing the payer's and recipient's details, the date and amount of the distribution, and any dividend withholding tax (DWT) deducted.
  • Since 3 April 2010, the statement may be delivered electronically to an intermediary or directly to the recipient, provided the recipient or intermediary consents and Revenue has approved the arrangement.
  • An electronic statement to an intermediary must include an ISI Number, a recipient ID code, the distribution date and amount, the DWT deducted, and a unique electronic number.
  • Failure to provide the required statement attracts a penalty of €200 per offence, subject to a maximum of €2,000 in respect of offences connected with any one distribution.
