Taxes Consolidation Act 1997 section 18

Schedule D

Section 18 sets out the charge to tax under Schedule D and classifies the various sources of income chargeable under that Schedule into five Cases.

  • Schedule D taxes business profits, rental income, interest, and other income arising to both resident and non-resident persons, with the scope of the charge depending on residency status.
  • Income sources are classified into five Cases: Case I (trades), Case II (professions), Case III (untaxed interest, annuities, foreign income), Case IV (miscellaneous income), and Case V (rental income and easements).
  • Income from an office, employment, or pension is not taxable under Schedule D unless it is from a foreign source, in which case it falls under Case III.
  • Other provisions of the Income Tax Acts may also direct that income be charged under Schedule D or under a specific Case, independently of this section.
