Returns of information in respect of awards of shares to directors and employees

Section 897B requires employers to file electronic returns with Revenue when they award shares, cash equivalents of shares, or share discounts to directors or employees.

  • Employers must report awards of shares, cash equivalents of shares, or share discounts made to directors or employees where income tax may be chargeable.
  • Returns must be filed electronically in a format approved by the Revenue Commissioners, on or before 31 March in the year following the year of the award.
  • The reporting obligation extends to the value of any discount on shares awarded to a director or employee.
  • The filing obligation does not apply where the employer is already required to report the same information under another provision of the Income Tax Acts.
