Membership of either House of Oireachtas, European Parliament or local authority

Section 28 disqualifies persons holding or nominated to certain political offices from appointment as chief executive or staff member of the Authority.

• A person cannot be appointed as chief executive or a member of staff of the Authority while holding specified political positions.
• Disqualification applies to members or nominees of Seanad Éireann, either House of the Oireachtas, or the European Parliament.
• It also applies to anyone entitled under Standing Orders to sit in either House of the Oireachtas or as a member of a local authority.
• The provision reflects standard restrictions commonly applied across public bodies to maintain the political independence of the Authority's executive and staff.
