Automatic Enrolment Retirement Savings System Act 2024 section 50

Automatic enrolment

Section 50 sets out the conditions under which a person is automatically enrolled in the retirement savings system and how their enrolment date is determined.

  • The Authority assigns the last day of the relevant pay reference period as the person's enrolment date where the eligibility conditions are met.
  • To qualify, a person must be aged at least 23 but under 60, be an employee in non-exempt employment, and have total gross pay across all employments of at least €20,000 per year (or a proportionate amount for shorter or longer pay reference periods).
  • Once the Authority determines that a person qualifies, it must notify the employer, who must in turn notify the employee of the determination and enrolment date.
  • An employer who fails to pass on this notification to the employee commits a criminal offence.
