Social Welfare Consolidation Act 2005 section 134

Entitlement to grant

Section 134 established the bereavement grant, a one-time payment that was available on the death of certain persons before 1 January 2014.

  • The bereavement grant was abolished for deaths occurring on or after 1 January 2014, so this provision is now of historical interest only.
  • The grant was automatically payable on the death of pensioners, their spouses, civil partners or cohabitants, qualified children receiving pension increases, orphans, and recipients of guardian's payments.
  • Where PRSI contribution conditions were satisfied, the grant also covered insured persons, their spouses, civil partners or cohabitants, surviving spouses of deceased insured persons, and other qualified children.
  • Regardless of how many qualifying conditions were met, only one bereavement grant could be paid in respect of any single death.
