Notification by employer or other person of commencement of employment

Section 253 empowers the Minister to require employers and contractors to notify the Department of the start dates of employments and service engagements.

  • The Minister can require employers to report the start date of any employee or person engaged under a contract for service.
  • Persons engaged under a contract for service can also be required to notify the Minister of the date they engaged someone to perform a service, whether under a formal contract or other arrangements.
  • The specific circumstances in which notification is required and the method of notification are set out in regulations.
  • Failure to comply with the notification requirements is a criminal offence.
