Social Welfare Consolidation Act 2005 section 161B

Rate of pension

Section 161B sets out how the weekly blind pension rate is determined and how the pension is reduced or withdrawn based on the claimant's means.

  • The basic weekly blind pension rate is €254.00, with additional amounts payable for each qualifying child who normally lives with the claimant: €58.00 per child under 12 years and €78.00 per child aged 12 or over.
  • If the claimant's weekly means do not exceed €7.60, the full pension is payable at the scheduled rate.
  • Where weekly means exceed €7.60, the pension is reduced by €2.50 for every €2.50 (or part thereof) by which the means exceed that threshold.
  • If the reduction calculation results in a pension of less than €2.50, no pension is payable.
