Social Welfare Consolidation Act 2005 section 290A

Budgeting in relation to certain rent payments

Section 290A allows the Minister to arrange for deductions from social welfare benefits to be paid directly to housing bodies to cover a beneficiary's rent.

  • Applies to beneficiaries who are tenants of a housing body or tenants receiving housing assistance under the Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2014
  • The Minister may arrange for rent to be deducted from a beneficiary's social welfare payment and paid directly to the housing body on their behalf, subject to the limits in section 290B
  • Deductions cease automatically if the beneficiary dies, stops being a tenant, or loses entitlement to the relevant benefit; they may also be discontinued with the housing body's consent
  • The Minister may make regulations covering application procedures, variation of deduction amounts, changes of housing body, and which benefits are subject to deduction
