Entitlement to payment

Section 234 provides for a continued payment for qualified children to support parents transitioning from jobseeker's payments into employment.

• The continued payment was available to long-term unemployed persons (at least 312 days on jobseeker's benefit or allowance) who had qualifying children living with them, or to participants in Community Employment who would otherwise have qualified for a child increase on jobseeker's payments.
• The payment was triggered when the person took up employment expected to last at least four weeks, causing them to lose entitlement to jobseeker's benefit or allowance, or when they left Community Employment for work.
• Since the enactment of the Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2015, no continued payment is payable for any period — the scheme is effectively closed.
• For the purposes of this Part, "employment" means insurable employment or insurable self-employment, but excludes Community Employment, other ministerial schemes (apart from the Jobs Initiatives Scheme), and seasonal work.
