Certain payments - entitlement to island allowance

Section 239A provides for a weekly island allowance payable to island residents who receive corresponding UK social welfare payments.

  • A person who ordinarily lives on an island and receives a UK payment corresponding to certain Irish social welfare benefits may qualify for a weekly island allowance.
  • Where the corresponding Irish benefits fall under sections 81, 82, 111, 113, 116, 126, 156, 164 or 174, the person must also have reached pensionable age.
  • Where the corresponding Irish benefits fall under sections 77, 121 or 211, there is no pensionable age requirement.
  • The weekly allowance is €12.70, or such other amount as may be prescribed by regulation.
