Payment card

Section 264 authorises the Minister to issue benefit payment cards (other than the public services card).

  • The Minister may issue a benefit payment card in any form they determine, but it must not be a public services card.
  • The card may carry inscribed information or data stored electronically in non-legible form, with the specific content prescribed by the Minister.
  • A cardholder (or their authorised representative) may request the information held on their card and should receive it within 28 days where practicable.
  • It is a criminal offence for anyone other than the cardholder or an authorised representative to use or attempt to use the card to obtain benefit payments.
