Entitlement to one-parent family payment where youngest child has attained relevant age

Section 173A provides transitional one-parent family payment protection for surviving spouses, cohabitants, and civil partners who are bereaved when their youngest child has already reached the qualifying age threshold.

  • Applies to surviving spouses, cohabitants, or civil partners who were living together when one partner dies
  • The survivor must be the parent, step-parent, adoptive parent, or legal guardian of at least one child living with them
  • Provides continued payment even though the youngest child has reached the relevant age threshold
  • Payment continues for up to two years from bereavement or until the youngest child turns 18, whichever is shorter
