Entitlement to supplementary welfare allowance

Section 189 establishes the basic entitlement to supplementary welfare allowance.

  • Supplementary welfare allowance is a means-tested payment available to anyone residing in the State.
  • Entitlement arises when a person's means are insufficient to meet their own basic needs.
  • The allowance also covers the needs of any qualified adult dependent (such as a spouse or partner).
  • The needs of any qualified child dependants are likewise taken into account.
