Social Welfare Consolidation Act 2005 section 225

Entitlement to carer's support grant

Section 225 provides for an annual carer's support grant of €2,000 per cared-for person, sets out the conditions that disqualify a carer from receiving the grant, and gives the Minister power to make regulations modifying those conditions.

  • An annual grant of €2,000 is payable to a carer for each person in his or her care, with only one grant payable per cared-for person per year.
  • A carer is disqualified if he or she is working, in education or training, receiving a jobseeker's payment, classified as unemployed under article 58 of the 1996 Regulations, or if the cared-for person resides in an institution.
  • The Minister may make regulations allowing a carer to work, be self-employed, or undertake education or training within prescribed limits on hours and earnings, and may also allow the grant where the cared-for person is temporarily in an institution or temporarily staying with another person.
  • Regulations may prescribe the date each year on which the grant becomes payable.
