Administration of social welfare schemes

Section 289 allows the Minister to delegate administrative functions relating to social welfare benefits to other persons, subject to prescribed conditions.

  • The Minister may delegate any function relating to the administration of any prescribed benefit to prescribed persons.
  • Any such delegation must comply with whatever conditions and circumstances are prescribed in regulations.
  • Regulations made under this section may apply to the whole State or to specified parts of it.
  • This provides flexibility for the Minister to decentralise benefit administration where appropriate.
