Social Welfare Consolidation Act 2005 section 28

Optional contributors and optional contributions

Section 28 allows people involved in share fishing to voluntarily opt into the social insurance system as contributors.

  • Share fishermen may elect to become "optional contributors" under prescribed conditions, paying optional contributions each year from the contribution year ending 5 April 1994
  • The timing and method of payment are determined by regulations
  • Optional contributor status ends if the person stops share fishing or ceases to be a self-employed contributor
  • Failure to pay the required optional contribution in any year also terminates optional contributor status
