Prohibition of alienation of documents

Section 276 makes it a criminal offence for any person to buy, take in exchange, or take in pawn any social welfare document covered by this chapter.

  • It is a criminal offence to purchase any social welfare document covered by this chapter
  • Taking such a document in exchange for something else is equally an offence
  • Accepting such a document as a pawn (i.e. as security for a loan or obligation) is also an offence
  • The offence applies to any person, not just claimants or employers
