Interpretation

Section 162 defines the key terms used throughout the chapter on bereaved partner's non-contributory pensions, including who qualifies as a bereaved partner and how means are calculated.

• "Pension" refers to the bereaved partner's (non-contributory) pension.
• "Weekly means" is calculated by dividing yearly means by 52, subject to the rules in Schedule 3 Part 5.
• The terms "widow", "widower", "civil partner", "bereaved partner" and "deceased partner" all take their meanings from section 123.
• A bereaved partner who marries, remarries, enters into a civil partnership or new civil partnership, or becomes (or again becomes) a qualified cohabitant loses their status as the bereaved partner of their former spouse, civil partner or qualified cohabitant.
