Social Welfare Consolidation Act 2005 section 228

Entitlement to supplement

Section 228 establishes the Working Family Payment, an income-tested allowance for families with children, setting out the weekly income thresholds that determine eligibility based on the number of children in the family.

  • The Working Family Payment is a weekly allowance funded by the Oireachtas for families whose income falls below specified thresholds.
  • Eligibility depends on the number of children in the family, with thresholds ranging from €765 per week for one-child families up to €1,532 for families with eight or more children.
  • The thresholds increase with each additional child, reflecting the higher costs associated with larger families.
  • The income limits have been amended numerous times since 2005, most recently by the Social Welfare and Automatic Enrolment Retirement Savings System (Amendment) Act 2025.
