Interpretation

Section 179 defines the key terms used in the carer's allowance provisions.

• A carer is someone who provides full-time care and attention to a relevant person, whether or not they live with that person.
• A relevant person is someone aged 16 or over (or under 16 if receiving domiciliary care allowance) who has a disability requiring full-time care and is not already receiving a constant attendance increase with disablement pension.
• Full-time care means the person needs continual supervision and frequent help with daily bodily functions, or continual supervision to avoid danger to themselves, for at least 12 consecutive months.
• Weekly means is calculated by dividing the person's yearly means by 52, in accordance with the rules in Part 5 of Schedule 3.
