Disqualification for benefit while participating in certain employment programmes

Section 247A disqualifies a person from receiving most social welfare benefits and assistance during any week (or part of a week) in which they are engaged by another person to carry out work under a designated job placement scheme.

  • A person on a qualifying placement is disqualified from benefits listed in section 39(1), except death benefit for funeral expenses, bereavement grant, or bereaved parent grant.
  • The disqualification also applies to assistance listed in section 139(1), except bereaved parent grant.
  • The disqualification applies for any full or partial week during which the person is carrying out work or duties under the placement.
  • The relevant placement scheme is the national internship scheme (section 298A(1)(b)).
