Appointment of deciding officers and designated persons

Section 299 provides for the appointment of deciding officers and designated persons to make decisions on social welfare entitlements, including supplementary welfare allowance.

  • The Minister may appoint deciding officers for the purposes of this Act, who hold office at the Minister's pleasure.
  • The Minister may also appoint designated persons specifically to determine entitlement to supplementary welfare allowance and the amount of any such allowance.
  • The Minister may terminate the appointment of a designated person at any time, regardless of whether the appointment was for a fixed period.
  • A designated person's appointment ceases automatically if the Minister terminates it, if a fixed-term appointment expires, or if the person ceases to be an officer of the Minister.
