Companies Act 2014 section 1008

Provisions as to names of PLCs

Section 1008 sets out the rules governing the naming requirements for public limited companies (PLCs), including permitted suffixes, abbreviations, and business name registration obligations.

  • A PLC's name must end with either "public limited company" or the Irish equivalent "cuideachta phoiblΓ theoranta"
  • These endings may be abbreviated to "p.l.c.", "plc", "c.p.t." or "cpt" in either lower-case or upper-case form after registration
  • The abbreviations may be used by anyone, including the PLC itself, once the company has been registered
  • A PLC trading under a name different from its registered corporate name must register that business name with the CRO, though merely using an abbreviation does not trigger this requirement
