Retention of accounting records

Section 285 requires companies to retain their accounting records, related information and returns for a minimum period of six years.

  • Companies must preserve all accounting records required under section 281 and any information or returns referred to in section 283(2).
  • The minimum retention period is six years.
  • The six-year period runs from the end of the financial year that contains the latest date to which the record, information or return relates.
  • This section replaces and amends the earlier requirement found in section 202(9) of the Companies Act 1990.
