Interpretation and application

Section 1110L defines the key terms used throughout the chapter on shareholders' rights in traded public limited companies, including references to data protection legislation and the meaning of "traded PLC".

• The "General Data Protection Regulation" (GDPR) refers to EU Regulation 2016/679, the well-known data protection law governing the processing and free movement of personal data across the European Union.
• "Personal data" and "special categories of personal data" carry the same meanings as defined in the GDPR — essentially, any information relating to an identifiable individual, with special categories covering sensitive data such as health, ethnicity or political opinions.
• A "traded PLC" takes its meaning from section 1099(4) of the Companies Act 2014, referring to a public limited company whose shares are admitted to trading on a regulated market.
• Any word or expression used both in this chapter and in the EU Shareholders' Rights Directive carries the same meaning in both, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise.
