Provisions as to names of companies

Section 26 sets out the rules governing how a company must be named, including the required suffixes, permitted abbreviations, business name registration obligations, and the Registrar's power to refuse undesirable names.

  • Every company name must end with either "Limited" (or "Ltd.") or "Teoranta" (or "Teo."), with abbreviations permitted after registration
  • A company trading under a name different from its registered corporate name must register that business name as required by law
  • The Registrar may refuse to register a company under a name considered undesirable, whether on incorporation, re-registration, merger, or division
  • A company may appeal to the court if the Registrar refuses registration on the grounds that the proposed name is undesirable
